I have found that a lot of people don’t seem to understand how hypnosis works. A lot of people assume if you are going to see a hypnotist you will walk into the hypnotist’s office with a bad habit and walk out without the bad habit. People think hypnosis works like magic, removing the unwanted behavior instantaneously! Let’s take smoking for an example. Often times, people think if they see a hypnotist once then the hypnotist will make them a non-smoker in one session. In some cases, this does happen, but not in all cases. In reality it is you who makes you a non-smoker, by your sheer will, determination, and desire to remove that unwanted habit. Hypnosis is just a tool to help get you there! Albeit, a great tool, but a tool that still needs dedication from you.
Hypnosis is not a magic session that works like flipping a switch in your head from on to off. Hypnosis is very powerful and can turn those unwanted habits to the off position, but you also need the want and will to make that happen. Why is that?
Your mind is a powerful machine that can create, destroy, and everything in between. If you think it and believe it, then your mind will manifest it into reality. If you think negative thoughts about yourself, eventually you will feel negative about yourself, which in turn causes you to act like someone who feels negative about themselves. How you think, leads to how you feel, which leads to how you act. If you change the way you think, you will change the way you feel and act. Which means, if there is any part of you that doesn’t really want to change the negative behavior, then your powerful mind will undo everything a hypnotist does, because how you think leads to how you feel and act. You have to change your beliefs about your habit from sort of committed to removing the habit to 100% fully committed on removing the habit! Remember, you are changing your habit for you!
Look at your mind the same way as you would look at a computer; since your mind is basically a supercomputer. On your computer you have programs running at all points in time. Some of these programs you want, but some you don’t. Sometimes you download a program by mistake and that one little program will cause your computer to run terrible. Your mind does the same exact thing. Your mind remembers everything it ever saw, heard, read, or felt throughout your entire life. Where do all those memories go? Into your subconscious mind.
Your mind is broken down into two parts, as far as hypnosis is concerned: conscious and subconscious.
The conscious mind makes up about 12% of your brain function and is the part of your mind that is always alert, and is focusing on what you are reading right now. The conscious mind can only focus on one task at a time. Meaning, if you are reading this then you are focusing on reading this and you are not focused on your toe, but now you are because I mentioned your toe which made you think of your toe, so now you are thinking of your toe. But you were not thinking about breathing, until now, when I brought it to your conscious mind’s attention. Understand? Your conscious mind is the part of your mind you think with, it knows right from wrong, it understands cookies aren’t very good for you to eat all the time, it knows when you need to change that bad habit, but it seems so hard to do. This is where the subconscious mind comes in.
The subconscious mind makes up about 88% of your mind that runs all the things you are not focused on, like your breathing, heart beating, blood flow, memories, walking, eating, drinking, driving, and pretty much everything your body does without you really thinking about it. Think of it this way, if you are super mad about something and you are driving home, are you really focused on the drive, steering the car, watching for other cars, paying attention to lights and pedestrians? No. You are focused on being super mad! Yet, on your drive home you didn’t get into a car accident, you knew how to get home, you didn’t have to consciously think about every little move you needed to do to drive home, you didn’t run anyone over, and you stopped at all of the lights. Your subconscious mind does all of that.
When does that change? If you moved to a new neighborhood and you are still getting used to the drive home. Then you are consciously aware of your drive. But once you get used to going home this new way, you will no longer think about it. It will become a part of your subconscious mind, letting you be free to focus on being super mad, or singing that song, or listening to the podcast or book.
Your subconscious is also what remembers everything you ever saw, heard, read, or felt throughout your entire life since your mind was developed. Think about that for a moment. Everything you ever saw, or everything you ever heard, or you ever read, or you ever felt. That’s a ton of things! If you were to think of all of those things right now your mind would begin to hurt. Go ahead! Try! You will see this is futile. Your conscious mind was not designed to remember that many things at the same time. This is where the subconscious mind excels. Your subconscious mind works like your hard drive on your computer, where you can store everything you ever saw, read, felt, or heard. Unlike your computer’s hard drive, your subconscious mind doesn’t have a limit of space. What does end up happening is you seem to “forget” memories. In reality, that is not true. You might not be able to consciously remember something stored in your subconscious hard drive, but your subconscious remembers it.
Now, let’s get back to the computer program. If you have a memory stored deep in your subconscious hard drive where someone said to you once that you were fat, and you believed them, then your subconscious will always remember “you are fat.” Even if you can’t. Then as you age and grow, you seem to gain weight. No matter what you do, you just can’t seem to lose weight. You join different weight loss groups, you try different diet plans, you try counseling, and nothing works. What is happening here?
That statement you heard years ago where someone said you were fat and you really believed it was true, now sits in your subconscious mind running like a bad program in the background of your supercomputer mind. Your subconscious mind doesn’t think, analyze, or rationalize anything. That is your conscious minds job. The subconscious mind only remembers and acts. So that statement that was said to you years ago is just sitting there running like a bad program causing you to have a hard time losing weight.
What hypnosis does is it finds that bad program and turns it off. Hypnosis changes that old belief of being fat and exchanges it with a wanted program. But wait a minute! If you can’t remember it, then how can hypnosis find it? Because when you are in a hypnotic state of mind, hypnosis accesses the subconscious part of the mind, allowing your subconscious mind to open up allowing access to those old stored memories. Once you find that old memory you completely forgot about, you can erase it, delete it, get that old file out of your hard drive forever. Which in turn will make your supercomputer mind run better. Here is the absolute best part about that! Once you erase that old file from your hard drive, you will never get it back. It’s gone forever! Allowing you to finally believe you can lose weight and whoever told you that you were fat is no longer saying that to you in your subconscious mind.
Hypnosis is a powerful tool that can be used to rewrite your subconscious minds bad programs that are not doing you any good. Hypnosis is not magic, it’s work. Work you put in for yourself by you to get better. This is done by you to make you have the life you want. A hypnotist is just a guide, helping you with the tool of hypnosis. Hypnosis is so powerful, you can do self-hypnosis with even more powerful results, because self-hypnosis gives you the tools to rewrite your hard drive by removing all of the negative thoughts and feelings, from things you have seen, read, or heard. Do not underestimate the power of your mind and the power of your own ability to change your unwanted behaviors with the use of hypnosis and self-hypnosis!
